When no plan is a good plan

Dr. Jones from ENT stopped by to see Ethan and talk to us this afternoon. She was pleased to hear that his cpap has been turned down to 7! Yeah! And they continued to reduce his chloral hydrate sedation. The best news is that ENT doesn't have any plans for surgery or anything else (unless he starts in the negative direction). Oh yes, and they finally moved him out of the warmer bed into a regular crib. They wouldn't do it earlier for fear he would need to be intubated emergently.

Dr. Dagle(sp?) from UINICU also came by. He said that he had talked to Dr. Rosenblum from St. Luke's this morning. He outlined the plan for moving Ethan back to Luke's:
  1. Wean him off the chloral to make sure he can tolerate the lower cpap fully awake during his temper tantrums. (Incidentally, he has been doing really well and not getting made too often).
  2. Wean him down/off(?) heliox to regular oxygen.
  3. Get the ok from ENT that he won't need them.
This has been a long road and any glimmers of hope are welcome. The threat of surgery has been pushed off, the medications seem to be doing the trick for Ethan's trachea, and it looks like we'll be able to be transported back to St. Luke's to continue Ethan's work on breathing, and to get his hernia operated on.

When the ENT people said that they had no plans for surgery, that was the best sounding plan of all.
