CT Scan

October first has been an adventurous day. I hear the Cubs played tonight...

It started with an exam with Dr. Smith. That's never much fun, but his eyes are developing ok. Then a blood gas co2 of 107. Followed by another of 87 an hour or so later. Dr. Nordine decided that that was ridiculous and he really wanted to get a better picture of Ethan's lungs. Xrays are great, but they are flat. A CAT scan gives a more 3D picture. So, they decided to give Ethan his first ride out of the nicu.

It's the first time that he has been anywhere further than across the hall. I wanted them to take the outside way to the main hospital so he could see the outside, but they didn't go for that. So the tunnel it was. It was quite the commotion to get the transport machine ready to go. Lots of new sounds and lots of nurses coming by to help get it ready to go. He was a celebrity of the nicu yet again.

45 minutes later, he was back from his scan and resting comfortably. A little too comfortably actually. They gave Ethan a little sedative to keep him calm during the scan. Chris was with him, so I'm telling this story second hand. He's going to be just fine, but they gave him more of the sedative than they meant to. The dose was within the parameters for his size, so he is fine. He'll just sleep really well tonight. They had meant to give him a tiny dose, and he ended up getting a bigger dose. It got through 3 checks because it was within the dosage limits for his size. Still, I'm not exactly a happy camper that he was the victim of a missing zero error. On the bright side, at least he'll get an awesome night of rest.
